There are three main Reiki Level 2 symbols. These were the keys given to Dr Usui on Mount Karama. The Reiki healing system is passed down through these unique symbols from master to student. The symbols play a significant role in the practice of Reiki, serving as sacred keys to unlock and focus specific energies during a healing session.

1. Different teaching styles

Lineage and Tradition

Reiki is a beautiful practice passed down through lineages, allowing each master to impart unique interpretations and techniques. The variation in Reiki teaching and practice makes it an inspiring and empowering discipline.

Individual Teaching Styles

Each Reiki master has a unique teaching style, preferences, and areas of expertise. Some masters may focus more on the spiritual aspects of Reiki. In contrast, others may emphasise the practical application of Reiki techniques, which can impact the content and structure of Reiki training courses.

Cultural and Regional Influences

Reiki has positively impacted people worldwide. As various cultures and regions have embraced Reiki, it has undergone modifications to suit different cultural backgrounds and beliefs. As a result, a diverse range of teaching methods exist, reflecting the unique perspectives of Reiki masters and their students.

Evolution of the Practice

Reiki has evolved with new techniques and approaches developed by different teachers, leading to variations in its practice.

Personal Beliefs and Philosophies:

Reiki practitioners have varied backgrounds and belief systems. Some may combine Reiki with other healing modalities or spiritual practices, while others follow traditional Reiki teachings. This diversity of perspectives can affect the content and emphasis of Reiki training programs.

Intentions and Goals

Reiki training can have different purposes for different people. Some may seek it for personal healing and spiritual growth, while others want to become professional Reiki practitioners or teachers. The focus of Reiki courses can vary depending on the goals of both the teacher and the student.

2. Different Reiki lineages

The lineage of all accredited practitioners can be traced back to the founder of Reiki, Mikao Usui, and subsequent teachers who passed down the teachings through direct communication. Although the core principles of Reiki remain consistent across all lineages, there are variations in techniques, symbols, and teaching methods that have emerged over time. Below are some of the significant Reiki lineages:

Usui Shiki Ryoho

This is the original lineage of Reiki founded by Mikao Usui in Japan in the early 20th century. Usui Shiki Ryoho emphasises self-healing, spiritual development, and using hand positions to channel universal life force energy. Chujiro Hayashi and Hawayo Takata are vital figures in this lineage, with Takata introducing Reiki to the Western world.

Takata Lineage

Hawayo Takata, a Japanese-American woman, brought Reiki to the West after learning it from Chujiro Hayashi in Japan. She trained 22 Reiki masters, who formed the foundation of the Takata lineage. Takata’s lineage is notable for its adherence to a specific set of hand positions and symbols, including the traditional Usui symbols and the addition of the Master symbol.

Traditional Japanese Reiki

Some practitioners seek to preserve the original teachings of Mikao Usui as closely as possible. This lineage focuses on Japanese Reiki techniques and teachings, often passed down from teachers who have studied in Japan. It may emphasise standardised hand positions and symbols less, instead prioritising intuition and direct connection to Reiki energy.

Western Reiki
Western Reiki encompasses various lineages that have evolved outside Japan, particularly in the United States and Europe. These lineages often incorporate elements of Western esoteric traditions, New Age spirituality, and other healing modalities. Western Reiki lineages may include additional symbols, techniques, and attunements beyond traditional Japanese Reiki.
Komyo Reiki Kai

Founded by Hyakuten Inamoto, Komyo Reiki Kai is a Japanese Reiki lineage emphasising simplicity, clarity, and authenticity. It seeks to preserve Mikao Usui’s original teachings while incorporating insights from Inamoto’s research and practice. Komyo Reiki Kai emphasises spiritual growth, mindfulness, and the cultivation of a pure heart.

Karuna Reiki®

Developed by William Lee Rand, Karuna Reiki® is a Western Reiki lineage incorporating additional symbols and techniques for healing and spiritual transformation. Karuna Reiki® symbols are said to resonate with higher frequencies of healing energy, facilitating deep emotional healing and spiritual awakening.

3. Reiki history and teachings

As mentioned, various factors, including cultural, historical, and individual perspectives, can contribute to the various ways of teaching Reiki. According to information from Japan, one alternative origin story of Reiki offers a different narrative than the commonly known version.

Cultural and Historical Context
Japan’s rich artistic and spiritual heritage influences how Reiki is perceived and taught within its borders. Traditional Japanese Reiki may emphasise ki (life force energy), mindfulness, and spiritual practices rooted in Japanese spirituality and philosophy.
Individual Interpretations

Different Reiki masters may interpret and teach Reiki based on their personal experiences, beliefs, and areas of expertise. This can lead to variations in techniques, symbols, and teaching methods across different lineages and schools of Reiki.

Cultural Transmission

Reiki was introduced to the West by Madame Takata, who learned Reiki in Japan from Chujiro Hayashi. Takata’s teachings and the subsequent spread of Reiki in the West may have influenced how Reiki is taught and practised outside of Japan, leading to differences in approach compared to traditional Japanese Reiki.

Evolution of the Practice

Reiki has adapted to different cultural contexts and societal changes. New insights, techniques, and teachings continue to emerge within the Reiki community, shaping how it’s taught and practised worldwide.

4. What it means to be a Reiki Master

Becoming a Reiki master means achieving the highest level of training and proficiency in the practice of Reiki. It requires extensive training, attunements, and demonstrating a deep understanding of Reiki’s principles, techniques, and ethics. Below are the prerequisites for being a Reiki master:

Advanced Training

Reiki masters have completed all levels of Reiki training, including Reiki Level 1, Reiki Level 2 Practitioner, and Reiki Master Level 3. Master level 3 focuses on advanced Reiki techniques, energy healing practices, and spiritual development.

Attunements

Reiki masters benefit from advanced attunements that enhance their ability to channel Reiki energy and expand their energy channels, enabling them to connect more deeply with the universal life force energy.

Teaching Certification

Reiki Masters can qualify to teach and attune others to Reiki after completing the Level 4 Master Teacher course, which imparts the required knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to instruct and mentor Reiki students effectively.

Mastery of Techniques

Reiki masters learn advanced techniques, including hand placements, symbol usage, distant healing methods, and intuitive healing practices. Graduates of the Level 3 Master Practitioner course will proficiently channel Reiki to assist in physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual healing.

Ethical Conduct

Reiki masters adhere to the highest ethical standards in their practice, respecting client confidentiality, maintaining professional boundaries, and honouring the principles of Reiki, such as compassion, integrity, and non-judgment.

Continued Learning and Growth

Being a Reiki master is not the endpoint of one’s journey but rather a milestone for continued development and growth. Reiki masters continue to deepen their understanding of Reiki, explore new techniques, and engage in personal and spiritual development practices.

Service and Contribution

Reiki masters often serve as mentors, guides, and leaders within the Reiki community, offering workshops, classes, and healing sessions to support others on their healing journeys. They may also contribute to the advancement of Reiki through research, writing, and community service.

5. Preparation for the Master level attunement

Preparing for the master-level attunement in Reiki involves practical and spiritual aspects to ensure readiness to receive and integrate higher frequencies of Reiki energy. Here’s a guide to help you prepare:

Review and Practice

Review and practice the techniques you learned in your Reiki Level II (Practitioner) training. This includes hand positions for treatments, symbol usage, and distant healing methods. Practice self-Reiki regularly to deepen your connection to the energy.

Meditation and Self-Reflection

Engage in meditation and self-reflection to cultivate inner stillness, clarity, and receptivity. Use this time to align with your intentions to become a Reiki master and release any fears or doubts about the process.

Clearing and Cleansing

Before your attunement, practice clearing and cleansing your energy field. This can include smudging with sage or other cleansing herbs, taking a purifying bath, or visualising a stream of white light washing away any negative or stagnant energy.

Healthy Lifestyle

Maintain a healthy lifestyle leading up to your attunement. Eat nourishing foods, stay hydrated, get plenty of rest, and exercise regularly to keep your energy flowing smoothly.

Setting Intentions

Set clear intentions for your master-level attunement. Reflect on how you plan to use the increased energy and knowledge you’ll receive to serve yourself and others. Write down your intentions and keep them as a reminder of your commitment.

Connect with Nature

Spend time in nature to ground yourself and connect with the natural flow of energy. Take walks in the woods, by the ocean, or simply spend time outdoors in quiet contemplation, attuning yourself to the rhythms of the Earth.

Seek Guidance

If you have questions or concerns about the master-level attunement process, please get in touch with me for guidance, support and reassurance as you prepare for this important step in your Reiki journey.

By preparing yourself physically, mentally, and spiritually, you’ll be better equipped to receive and integrate the higher frequencies of Reiki energy during your master-level attunement. Trust in the process, stay open to the experience and surrender to the flow of divine energy.
